            - Experience including organic synthesis; protein and polysaccharide purification; gas-liquid chromatography; NMR.

Graduate student (1979-1983):  X-ray crystallographic studies of periplasmic binding proteins involved in chemotaxis with Dr. G. A. Petsko of the Department of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA.

            - Experience including bacterial fermentation; protein purification, assay and analysis; protein crystallization; X-ray structure solution by multiple isomorphous replacement and molecular replacement.

Post-doctoral fellow  (1983-1987): Biochemical and crystallographic studies of the membrane-bound aspartate receptor involved in bacterial chemotaxis with Dr. D.
