General lab rules
- Before you start working in the lab you must receive information
about general safety. You should know how to handle chemicals,
various equipment and what to do in case of fire etc. This is
important and must always be respected even if you work in the
lab only for a shorter period. Contact persons:

X-ray work
- Those of you who want to work on the X-ray generators must get special
training ('Drivers license') from Torsten Unge, Dept. Cell and
Molecular Biology/UU and Christer Andersson, Dept. Molecular
Biology/SLU
Administrative and general matters

- A bulletin board is found at the entrance of corridor D11:1.
Here you find information about seminars, applications,
scholarships etc. Note that this type of information tends to
be transferred to the web. i.e. it does not appear on paper.
- Door cards for the main entrances can be obtained at the
reception. Contact your secretary for information.
- To enter the corridors during non-office hours you need a code
number.
- Mailboxes are found outside the secretarys office in D11:1
(Molecular Biology/SLU and Cell and Molecular Biology/UU) and in
the middle of corridor C10:1 (Biochemistry/UU) .
- A photocopying machine is located outside the secretary's
office.
Computing
- Accounts can be arranged by Erling Wikman (D11:108b) or
David van der Spoel.
- Please note that all users must take care of their own back-ups.
Libraries
- There is a local library located in D11:1 room 107 a. Here you
find structurally related journals as well as Nature, Science,
etc. The departments also subscribe to a local daily paper
(Upsala Nya Tidning).
- The BMC library is located in A6:2 (above the restaurant).
- Copy cards for the BMC library are available at the reception in
C7:2.
- The main Ultuna library is located at the Ultuna campus,
Undervisningsplan 10 (link)
Seminars
- Joint seminars for the structural groups are held on Fridays at
14.00 usually in room C10:305.
- BMC seminars are announced
here.
- Some of the individual groups also have group meetings/seminars.
Food
- There is a small kitchen with microwave ovens in connection to
the local library where you also will find a coffee machine.
A newly built larger lunch room is available in corridor C10:3.
- The BMC restaurant is in A6:1. There are also
several lunch restaurants within 5-10 minutes walking distance
from BMC.
Car park
- You may park your car in one of the BMC-parking areas. You pay
per hour/day (parking meters) or buy a card for 6 month or 1 year.
OUTSIDE THE LAB
Residence permit and 'Personnummer'
- In Sweden you need a personal number and in order to get that
you need a residence permit.
- Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway):
- Before you leave your home country you have to get a 'internordiskt flyttbevis'. You hand this over to Skatteförvaltningen in Uppsala to get your personal number directly.

- Get a form called 'Recidence permit for EEA'
- Non-EU/EEA members: your recidence permit has to be arranged
before you come to Sweden !
- Now it is time to get your personal number. This consists of your
date of birth (YYMMDD) plus 4 digits. These digits can be obtained
from 'Skatteförvaltningen' (Tax authorities;
link):

- It might be practical to get a swedish ID-card. This can be issued by a bank
assuming you have an account there for which you usually need a personal number.
Medical attention
- Telephone book, blue pages (in Swedish only).
- For emergencies dial 112 and ask for an ambulance. This
is also the number to use for the fire department and police
(emergencies only).
- In order to get medical treatment at reduced rates you need to
be a member of the Swedish medical insurance system
'Försäkringskassan'.(link):
Check this carefully with your
employer !
- Note: It is possible to register at 'Försäkringskassan'
also without a personal number which means you can go there on
your first day to make sure that you get in to the system as soon
as possible.
- EU/EEA members: Remember to get an E101 form before you leave your home country. Furthermore it is necessary to have an E111 form from Sweden when you travel within the EU/EEA countries (even to your home country!).
When you leave Sweden permanently to another EU/EEA country you should remember to get an E101 form from 'Försäkringskassan'.
