Individual Grants for the Advancement of Research Leaders
The Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research announces for competition a number of individual grants, each of SEK 6 million (appr. EUR 660 000 or USD 770 000), to young outstanding scientists. The grant holder is expected to perform innovative research at a Swedish university or research institute normally for four years. Applications are invited from researchers in Sweden as well as in other countries. In the latter case, applicants shall be able to demonstrate a Swedish connection. The grant is intended for building a research group, although the grant may be used for part of the recipient's own salary.
This announcement covers research in all areas relevant to the objective of the Foundation according to its statutes. Thus SSF shall support research in natural science, engineering and medicine and promote the development of strong research environments of the highest international standards with a view to enhancing Sweden's future competitiveness. The areas that presently make up the core of the Foundation's activities are electronics, information technology, life sciences, materials sciences, production and process technologies and interdisciplinary research that integrates these areas. Other areas within the scope of the Foundation may be considered.
In a first step of the selection process, a summary of future research plans, previous research accomplishments, a CV, and three letters in support of the application are to be the Foundation at hand by 9 October, 2003 (announcement (pdf), application form (rtf)).
Senior Individual Grants
The Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research announces for competition a number of individual grants to enable senior scientists with a strong track record to take up new challenges.
The programme is directed towards internationally well recognised senior scientists, working in Sweden, in the research areas supported by the Foundation (natural science, engineering and medicine), who want to renew their research and explore new ideas, preferably of a cross-disciplinary, integrative nature. The proposed research should be of benefit to industry and society in Sweden.
Twenty grants, each of SEK 1.5 million (appr. EUR 165 000 or USD 192 000) for a period of one year will be allocated in the first stage. The purpose of the grant is to enable the grantee to be relieved from ongoing tasks and assignments. One year later, the Foundation will announce a number of additional grants each around SEK 6 million (appr. EUR 660 000 or USD 770 000) for research activities over three years, to be applied for in competition by the 20 grantees from the first stage. The purpose of the second grant is to make it possible to realise a research project in Sweden, based on the inspiration and experience obtained during the renewal year (announcement (pdf), application form (rtf)).
